Experience studies: active decrements and inactive mortality
The following logic is used to track changes in status and thereby determine actual experience for active decrements , (k = cause of decrement, applied to life of member x) and inactive mortality, . Note that:
Valid status codes are "active", "retired", "retired & cashed out", "vested", "vested & cashed out", "disabled", "disabled & cashed out", "survivor", "survivor & cashed out", "death", or "non-participating".
The status "non-participating" is assigned to a member who is missing a record as of the valuation date (i.e., the life is omitted from that year’s database).
Records with a "non-participating" status (including absent records) as of the beginning of the year are excluded from the exposure for that year.
The "cashed out" statuses always indicate end of year results, and status as of the beginning of the following year is "non-participating". Records with these statuses are excluded from the following year’s beginning-of-year counts and exposure.
For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "active",
if end of year status is "retired" or "retired & cashed out" (or if end of year status is "vested", "vested & cashed out" or "non-participating", but the participant is eligible for retirement at the assumed date of decrement and actuarial assumptions assume termination rates cease upon attaining retirement eligibility);
if end of year status is "vested", "vested & cashed out" or "non-participating" (or if end of year status is "retired" or "retired & cashed out", but the participant is not eligible for retirement at the assumed date of decrement);
if end of year status is "survivor", "survivor & cashed out" or "death";
if end of year status is "disabled" or "disabled & cashed out".
Inactive mortality
For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "retired", "vested", or "disabled",
if end of year status is "survivor", "survivor & cashed out", "death", or "non-participating".
For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "survivor",
if end of year status is "death" or "non-participating".
For participants with a contingent annuitant y (i.e., a beneficiary or dependent) at the beginning of the year,
if no contingent annuitant exists at end of year. There are two exceptions:
1) If =1 and end of year status is "retired", "retired & cashed out", "vested", "vested & cashed out", "disabled", "disabled & cashed out", "survivor", or "survivor & cashed out" (i.e., inactive), then =0. In other words, if member died but the record still has an inactive participating status, then the beneficiary must still be alive.
2) If beginning-of-year status is "retired", "vested", or "disabled" and end of year status is "active" (i.e., rehired), then =0.
