Experience studies: active decrements and inactive mortality

The following logic is used to track changes in status and thereby determine actual experience for active decrements image/ebx_-1628934920.gif, (k = cause of decrement, applied to life of member x) and inactive mortality, image/ebx_-821561514.gif. Note that:

Active decrements

For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "Active",

image/ebx_2034483125.gif if end of year status is "Retired" or "Retired & cashed out" (or if end of year status is "Vested", "Vested & cashed out", "Vested valued through active", Vested valued through active & cashed out" or "Non-participating", but the participant is eligible for retirement at the assumed date of decrement and actuarial assumptions assume termination rates cease upon attaining retirement eligibility);

image/ebx_-1182783640.gif if end of year status is "Vested", "Vested & cashed out", "Vested valued through active", Vested valued through active & cashed out" or "Non-participating" (or if end of year status is "Retired" or "Retired & cashed out", but the participant is not eligible for retirement at the assumed date of decrement);

image/ebx_843691666.gif if end of year status is "survivor", "survivor & cashed out" or "death";

image/ebx_-105170523.gif if end of year status is "disabled" or "disabled & cashed out".

Vested valued through Active decrements

For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "Vested valued through active",

image/ebx_2034483125.gif if end of year status is "Retired" or "Retired & cashed out"

image/ebx_843691666.gif if end of year status is "survivor", "survivor & cashed out," "death," or "non-participating".

Inactive mortality

For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "retired", "vested" or "disabled",

image/ebx_-528556756.gif if end of year status is "survivor", "survivor & cashed out", "death", or "non-participating".

For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "survivor",

image/ebx_-1551982876.gif if end of year status is "death" or "non-participating".

For participants with a contingent annuitant y (i.e., a beneficiary or dependent) at the beginning of the year,

image/ebx_1409908752.gif if no contingent annuitant exists at end of year. This is true for participants with both beginning-of-year status and end of year status coded as "survivor".  There are two exceptions:

  1. For participants with the beginning-of-year status coded as "retired", "vested" or "disabled" and end of year status coded as "survivor" or "survivor & cashed out", then image/ebx_696170118.gif=1 and image/ebx_1418636746.gif=0.  If member died but the record still has an inactive participating status, then the beneficiary must still be alive.  Note, if end of year status is "death", or "non-participating", then image/ebx_696170118.gif=1 and image/ebx_1418636746.gif=1.

  2. If beginning-of-year status is "retired", "vested", or "disabled" and end of year status is "active" (i.e., rehired) or "vested valued through active", then image/ebx_-1216237320.gif =0.
