Age Definitions
The Age Definition library allows you to define the level of precision of the member and beneficiary ages to be used for table values and calculating factors.
Name is a text field in which you enter a description of the age definition. This may be any descriptive phrase, including spaces. If checked, Auto will generate a name for the library entry based on the parameters selected. Additionally, the name automatically regenerates upon future edits to the library entry, accurately reflecting the current selections.
Age definition may be defined as age:
If Alternate member date of birth is checked, age will be calculated using the selected field instead of the Member's date of birth field specified in the Census Specifications. Similarly, if Alternate beneficiary date of birth is checked, the beneficiary's age age will be calculated using the selected field instead of the Beneficiary's date of birth field specified in the Census Specifications. These features are useful for plans that calculate age in a way that does not neatly fit into one of the age calculation approaches listed above such as, for example, granting a month of age if the member is born after the 15th of the month. Simply modify the date of birth in a Data Default expression and reference the modified date field to get the desired age calculation result. An alternate date of birth is not permitted for the Default Age Definition defined in Plan Attributes, and does not apply to places where Age Definitions have not been implemented such as Eligibility Definitions.
Note that when an alternate date of birth field is referenced in a Social Security Level Income or Joint Life & Social Security Level Income payment form, the social security normal retirement age for the length of the temporary period and form eligibility will reference the alternate date of birth, but the PIA itself, if calculated, will reference the Census Specifications date of birth.
If Years and ______ months or Exact is selected, the following additional parameters are available:
Round age to {number} decimal places determines annuity factors and /or table values based on the interpolated age rounded to the specified number of decimal places.
Override beneficiary age to {nearest / last birthday} determines annuity factors for joint life payment forms and/or table values for age by beneficiary age tables based on the member's interpolated age and the beneficiary's integral age nearest or last birthday, depending on the selection.
*Note: There is a parameter that exclusively applies to years and nearest months that is set in Plan Attributes Miscellaneous Parameters : When calculating nearest age in months, either assume 30 days per month or use exact age.
Additional details about how ProAdmin calculates age are available in the Technical Reference article Age Calculations.
